Has anyone been on a diet and exercised and did not lose weight?

Question by S007: Has anyone been on a diet and exercised and did not lose weight?
I did Nutri-system for 5 weeks and went to the gym 3 to 4 times a week. Each time at the gym, I did about 45 minutes of elliptical machine (about 400 to 500 cal according to counter) and then about 0.5 hours of weight machines to build muscles.
After 5 weeks and no cheating, I lost 1 pound!!!!
Please don’t tell me it’s muscle…
I have been told by a holistic practitioner that though I am not diabetic, my insulin is messed up and carbs turn to fat, no matter how many calories I am burning. She told me to go on a no carb diet (the Paleo diet). So now, all I eat are veggies and fish and fruit and I do pilates or The Firm everyday but I am so scared that it’s not going to work again…
Has anyone experienced this (working out and dieting and not lose weight?). Were you ever successful in losing the weight? (and yes, the “fat gene” runs in my family).
This is driving me nuts are I know it is not scientifically possible not to lose weight this way, however I am the living proof…
I cannot imagine eating 1600 calories a day, as I have been on 800-1200 calories for most of my adult life. I feel that if I ate normally, I would be 500 pounds! You right about my body thinking it’s starving, that’s why I eat a fruit or some veggies every few hours… but I guess it’s not enough???
and yes, I do drink a lot of water…

Firstly, the machines greatly exaggerate how many calories burned, so they are at best a guideline.

Secondly, depending on how many calories you’re consuming, your body might be holding onto the fat because it thinks it’s starving.

I experienced what happened to you when I wasn’t drinking enough water and not getting enough sleep, in addition to severely restricting my calories.

After I increased my caloric intake to 1600 calories a day and bumped my workouts so they were more challenging, more frequently, but for less time I was able to drop 140 pounds in about a year and a half.
