Pregnant women have to eat about an extra 300 calories a day to support the growing baby and the demands it places on the body. This weight doesn’t go into the baby. A baby weighs a few pounds when it is born but pregnant women have to put on around 20-35lbs during pregnancy to be healthy. All this extra weight doesn’t just fall off after the baby is born, it stays on because that’s what the body is programmed to do. Also all the milk a woman will produce causes extra weight to be put on. Again, this doesn’t just disappear when the baby grows up.
